Would you get your car fixed by someone who can’t drive?
Before you start wondering if you’ve ended up on the wrong website, let me explain.
My name is Alessio Giacobone, I am the founder of Genesee Piano Tuning, and I’ve been playing the piano since I was a toddler. In fact, I don’t even remember a time when I couldn’t read music!
I graduated in 2010 from the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella in Naples, Italy—where I’m originally from—one of the oldest and most prestigious music schools in the world. In 2019, I earned a Master of Music in Organ Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY.
But beyond the credentials, I’ve played. A lot. Both as a concert performer and as Director of Music for numerous churches across the globe. I am, first and foremost, a musician. That means when I tune an instrument, I think of music, not just sound.
Tuning a keyboard instrument is, at its core, a simple concept: adjusting the pitch of each note in relation to a given reference. Most tuners rely on electronic devices for faster, more efficient results—I do, too! But once I’m finished with the tuning lever and mutes, I sit down and play the instrument.
I forget about soundwaves, frequencies, beats, and partials. I just play the piano as only an experienced professional musician can. I take the tones I’ve been shaping and use them as bricks to build an ephemeral cathedral of harmonies. This is the only way to catch anything amiss. This is the only way to ensure I’ve done an outstanding job.
